Puffball and Dustball
...does Puffball finally have someone to love?

Dustball and Puffball -- they seem like a perfect match!

Most desert hamsters can live alone, in pairs, or in small groups. But we seem to have found a few that are different. First, we brought home Bright Spot, who insists on living alone.

Then we brought home Puffball, who refused to live (at least happily) alone. Puffball thought she would live happily ever after with Buffball and Fluffball, her cage mates at the pet shop that we brought home to cheer her up. But Fluffball developed a different plan for the future.

Dustball and Puffball before they were formally introduced.

At the exact same time that we were wondering how we would know which one of the desert hamsters that had just arrived at the pet shop would be the best match for Puffball, the desert hamsters there were doing something very unusual for desert hamsters. They were "beating up" one poor little desert hamster so he had to be separated from the others and put in a cage all by himself ...

So we walked into the pet shop and out with Dustball, who turned out to have multiple personalities. The first few chapters in this story went as follows:

  • I placed Puffball and Dustball in a ten gallon tank with a divider. (I was planning to leave the divider in place several days, but Dustball and Puffball kept looking at each other curiously ...)
  • I removed the divider after about 24 hours ...
  • Dustball changed from a timid, frightened little desert hamster into a romantic, attentive gentleman desert hamster ...
  • Puffball changed from a sad and lonely little desert hamster into a happy, cuddly desert hamster!

We thought that this time Puffball would live happily ever after.

UNFORTUNATELY, WE WERE WRONG ...
